Nestled comfortably between Spain and France with a population of just over 80,000 is the world’s 16th smallest country, Andorra.
Known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant shopping scene, this tiny country is full of experiences waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re an adventurer, a history lover or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Andorra has something for you. We recommend adding Andorra to your travel bucket list.
Winter
In the winter months, skiers and snowboarders flock to Andorra to take advantage of the snowy mountains and some of the best ski resorts in all of Europe. Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees and offers over 200 kilometers of skiable slopes for every level.
Vallnord is another of Andorra’s top ski resorts which offers diverse activities in addition to skiing and snowboarding. Try snowshoeing, snowmobiling or building an igloo. This is a great place to get away as a family looking for a fun, versatile and safe environment.
The city of Andorra la Vella is charming to wander around in winter, with beautiful lights, decorations and chestnut roasters on almost every corner. The ski season runs from December to April (depending on snowfall) and resorts are equipped with modern facilities for a comfortable vacation.
Summer
As I’m not a skier, this is my favorite time to travel to Andorra. My husband and I have taken quite a few anniversary trips here in late June. One year we even found ourselves hiking in the snow…in June!
After the snow melts away, the landscape is absolutely breathtaking. It’s like stepping into a fairytale with wildflowers, soft mossy grasses and happy butterflies flitting about. If you’re into hiking and nature, I highly recommend a visit here. From the Valira River to the highest peak of the Coma Pedrosa, the views and foliage are some of the most beautiful in the world.
I recommend a visit to Lagos de Tristaina for unbeatable views. Pack a picnic lunch and sit by the lake to savor the moment.
Shopping
Andorra is also known for its duty-free shopping, so if you’re into retail therapy, don’t miss Andorra la Vella for some good deals. Avinguda Meritxell is one of the most famous shopping streets, You can find everything from fashion and jewelry to electronics and beauty products. You’ll find international brand stores and local boutiques. Illa Calemany is one of Andorra’s largest shopping centers. This mall contains a variety of stores, restaurants, cinema, and a fantastic supermarket. It’s your one-stop shop!
If you’re entering Andorra from the east and just taking a quick day trip for supplies, you’ll only need to go as far as Pas de la Casa. This small town is known for its laid-back duty-free shopping and if you drive just above the shopping area, you’ll find some spectacular views and fields full of happy Andorran cows.
Still unsure?
While Andorra is small, it has a giant place in my heart. In my opinion, it has some of the most beautiful mountains and landscapes in the world. I will never tire of visiting this gorgeous country. I grew up close to Lake Tahoe and developed an appreciation for mountains and lakes early on. I feel very fortunate to live close enough to be able to make Andorra a weekend getaway, but I’d travel far and wide to visit it again and again. If you enjoy mountains and nature, add this to your wishlist immediately, and get in touch. I’d love to curate the perfect trip for you!
