A little getaway to Edinburgh: Pubs, Cafés, and Stunning Sights
Edinburgh, Scotland’s historic and atmospheric capital, is a city that effortlessly blends the old with the new. From its medieval Old Town to its vibrant pub culture, there’s something for every traveler. On a recent trip, (celebrating my husband’s birthday) we explored some of Edinburgh’s best spots for food, drinks, and breathtaking views.
Exploring History and Local Gems
Southern Cross Cafe & a Wander
We woke up on day 1 ready to grab some breakfast. Since the apartment we rented was right on the Royal Mile, we had plenty of options to choose from. On our way down the stairs to the ground floor, I spotted a cute cafe just across the street. We decided to try it out. Southern Cross Cafe, ended up being the perfect cozy spot. Their rich, delicious coffee and plentiful breakfast menu options were the perfect fuel for a long day of exploring. The friendly service and warm atmosphere made it an ideal place to start the morning.
We spent the afternoon wandering the streets and walking down different closes (a close is a narrow alleyway or passage that runs between buildings). We wandered down the Royal Mile and ducked in and out of shops.
Exploring Edinburgh Castle
No visit to Edinburgh is complete without a trip to Edinburgh Castle. Perched high on Castle Rock, the castle offers sweeping views of the city, as well as fascinating history within its walls. From the Crown Jewels to the Stone of Destiny, the castle is a must-see for history buffs.

Savoring the Flavors of Edinburgh
Pints & Pages
If you’re in the mood for a pint of beer and delicious traditional pub fare, look no further than The World’s End, a historic pub with a rich past. The cozy ambiance and selection of Scottish ales made it the perfect dinner spot.
After dinner, we wandered into Lighthouse (Edinburgh’s Radical Bookshop), a haven for book lovers. This independent bookstore is filled with thought-provoking titles and a welcoming atmosphere, making it easy to get lost in the shelves.
Brunch and Craft Beers
Day number 2 started with a relaxed brunch at Salt Horse Beer Shop, Bar & Burgers. With its impressive selection of craft beers and mouthwatering burgers, this spot is a paradise for food and beer enthusiasts. The laid-back vibe and knowledgeable staff made it a highlight of my weekend.
After eating, we strolled through The Meadows, a vast green space next to the University of Edinburgh. The crisp air and people-watching made for a delightful afternoon.
On the way back to our flat, we stopped at Thomas J Walls Coffee to warm up. We were so impressed by the flavor of the coffee, we purchased a bag of beans to bring home.
Whisky Tastings & Cozy Pubs
For those who wish to sample the local whiskeys, try Whiski Bar & Restaurant, where you can enjoy a dram or a flight of fine Scotch whisky. The warm and lively atmosphere, coupled with an excellent selection of whisky, makes for a truly Scottish experience.
I also highly recommend The Albanach, another fantastic whisky bar on the Royal Mile. With its extensive whisky menu and traditional decor, it’s the perfect way to wrap up the evening.
A Final Day Hiking and French Food

Arthur’s Seat & French Fare
Though I missed out on this site, my husband took a run up to Arthur’s Seat, the extinct volcano that dominates the skyline. It was an icy climb, so be careful if you attempt this in the winter. Next time we go back, I hope to hike it. He returned with amazing photos and said the climb was well worth the effort.
Before wrapping up, I have to mention Petit Paris, a charming French bistro tucked away in the Grassmarket. This is where we had the birthday dinner, it did not disappoint. The intimate setting and delicious fare made for a delightful ending to a perfect weekend in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is a city that offers so much, from its historic landmarks to its thriving pub and café scene. Whether you’re here for the sights, the food, or the whisky, you’re sure to leave with unforgettable memories. Cheers to Edinburgh—until next time!
